Teaching / Mentoring

I believe in an open, honest, genuine approach to mentoring & guiding composers, students, artists, musicians and creatives in their practice. I was lucky enough to receive fantastic mentorship and guidance in my emerging stages of my career that shaped my perceptions, knowledge and understanding of my practice and industries I adore. I love that I am in a position to pay this forward and continue the offering of previously gate kept information.

What students say

Approach / Thoughts / Philosophy

I’ve been working professionally as a composer for long enough to see the impact of covid, brexit and governments that cut arts funding, we can't deny this has changed the landscape for composers and the creative sector as a whole. Funding and commission opportunities are as a result super competitive, less international artists are funded to perform here, venues are closing down due to high rent and lack of audience members resulting in promoters and venues able to offer smaller fees aka 'the touring musician' is becoming harder to sustain as a sole income.

Artists are under huge amounts of pressure to be content creators alongside sustaining their creative practice; often needing to priortise other paid work sometimes outside of the creative sector to live often leading to burnout, anxiety and stress or other mental health illnesses and a lack of engagement with their music.

Amongst all of these challenges, I genuinely believe composers CAN 'make it work'. The one thing that has consistently helped me to either see projects come into fruition or helped me to sustain a career is that genuine honesty . Often advice is shrouded in corporate speak; offering what you 'could' do without much emphasis on 'how to' make it happen in reality.  I love to offer something different to this; an open, flexible, adaptable approach, guided by students 100% but if you ever need an answer or a practical solution to something - I’m there ready and willing to offer it.
